The Last of the Red Hot Ryus: Male Sexualization and Desire in Games

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

In games and games culture, the sexualization of and desire for male characters and bodies is often relegated to the level of a joke. An assumed male audience in games both limits the appearance of male characters that are an object of desire, and downplays or minimizes moments when they do appear.

This panel will discuss the context of male sexualization and desire in video games -- how the downplaying of desire for male characters is part of many bigger discourses about power, femininity, and queer sexuality. We'll examine how that desire is channeled into particular narrow expressions. Finally, we'll discuss how players and fans push back against those expressions and what that pushback can teach designers, developers, and writers about getting more diverse and interesting sexualization of men into their work.

Speakers: Maddy Myers (The Mary Sue), Gita Jackson (Paste Magazine), Dante Douglas (University of Oregon), Todd Harper (University of Baltimore)
