Playful Tools For Abstract Worlds: Creating PANORAMICAL

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

This presentation will provide the first ever look behind the creative process of PANORAMICAL, the award-winning IGF-nominated collection of abstract musical landscapes with analog controls. Co-creator Fernando Ramallo will show how essential it was to create tools that allowed him to perform and play while creating each world, how creating the game was very similar to playing it, how through encouraging playfulness, experimentation and discovery 'by accident', Fernando found a process that allowed him to create interesting immersive abstract environments and complex audiovisual interactions with intuitive controls.

Topics will include: How one simple tool shaped the entire game; Playfulness In Creation as a principle, letting go of planning and visualization; How interactive visuals and sounds work together in PANORAMICAL; Creating the dazzling introduction sequence with unpredictable flowing figures and colors; Curating randomness and giving the player control while keeping the output interesting; Designing for multiple controllers, including analog MIDI devices; Challenges and rewards of collaborating with other artists; Simple shaders that create infinitely complex effects; Explaining innovative controls and failing, how I rewrote the tutorial 5 times; How well did it sell? (Hint: not well) and moving on;
